Pre-Natal Classes

There are many classes on offer and I know how confusing it can be to know which ones to choose. Many attend a traditional hospital class, without realising there are many choices and it is important to shop around. Following is some useful questions to ask before you book.
- How long have you been a childbirth educator?
- What is your background? Not all childbirth educators are Midwives and some have never worked with women and babies in a maternity unit setting. This may or may not be an issue for you.
- What is your philosophy? Some educators focus on active birth, HypnoBirthing®, medical intervention etc.
- What is the cost?
- Do you offer a range of times, e.g. weekend workshops, longer courses, intensive, individual sessions?
- Does the cost include my support people. Your doula may like to attend a class with you and your partner.
At Birth Right™ we focus on empowering women. We know the information that you need to make informed choices.
You will leave our Active Birth classes with information about:
- The hospital system – it is important to understand what will happen in hospital and what health professionals you may come into contact with
- How labour starts and when to go in to hospital
- Pre-labour
- Stages of labour
- Partner’s role
- Doula’s role
- Active Birth – a term that simply defines a woman being in control of her birthing experience, eg. Use of water during labour, massage, using different positions. There are many others that will be explored in your class
- Medical interventions. Know what they are, when they may be used, what are your choices and how to maintain as much of your birth plan as possible, if, in the rare event, medical intervention is necessary.
- Included in medical interventions is drugs. It is really important to know what the benefits are of drugs, what the reasons are for using drugs, and what the disadvantages are for Mum and baby.
- After the birth. Now you have your baby, how will you feel? Explore all your choices about staying in hospital, early discharge, tests for baby and breastfeeding.
These classes are small enough groups to have lots of discussion and share information with other couples. They are fun, informative and empowering.
Classes are run by a Health Professional with over 30 years experience or other professionals who have been trained by Birth Right™.
